Should You Consider Reiki For Your Dog Or Cat?

By Suesie Hartman

HOLISTIC HEALING

The largest and fastest growing industry in the United States is human healthcare. The second largest growing industry is that of animal healthcare. As of 2017, 68% of all US households owned at least one pet. Over 95 million people in the US own cats, while more than 90 million people in the US own dogs. Today, pets are more likely to be treated as full-fledged family members and cherished companions than ever before. Pet owners are becoming more aware of their pet’s physical challenge/issues, including their emotional and psychological needs and issues.

How Reiki Helps Pets

Like humans, dogs and cats, even horses and goats, can truly benefit from Reiki in many ways. Reiki provides an increased state of relaxation and calm, provides pain relief, speeds healing after surgery, or during an illness, can improve behavioral issues, can lessen anxiety-related problems, enhance overall well being and increase/improve the pet-owner emotional bond.

Pets in all stages of life can benefit from Reiki. This includes competition pets/agility athletes, show dogs and cats, couch potatoes, and especially pets in their senior years. Competition pets often receive Reiki to enhance their performance or to assist in a speedy recovery from a sports-related injury.

Back in 2003, the American Veterinarian Medical Association adopted and updated its practices to include “complementary alternative and integrative therapies.” Reiki is included in their umbrella of alternative therapies. In the last ten years, the use of animal Reiki among animal rescue groups, animal behaviorists, pet owners and veterinarians has skyrocketed. Reiki is being used more and more, in conjunction with Western/Allopathic medical treatments, in efforts to approach an illness or injury from many sides.

What Happens in a Pet Reiki Session?

A Reiki session for an animal usually lasts between fifteen to thirty minutes in length. It is not necessary for the Reiki practitioner to actually touch the animal during a session. For example, recently captured feral cats may not be ready to be held by those rescue workers caring for them. A Reiki practitioner would simply sit close to the cage of feral cats, without directly touching them during the session.

It has been my personal experience that many times a dog, a horse or a goat, will simply get up and walk away when they have received what they perceive to be enough Reiki. Occasionally, I donate my time, to work with people’s dogs. The owners make a donation for the Reiki, and I donate 100% of the proceeds to a local animal shelter.

During these events, I flow Reiki to dogs, scheduled every 15 minutes, over a 3-hour period. I sit on the floor, so I am at the same level as the dogs. Most owners sit nearby to watch or ask questions. Even anxious or occasionally agitated dogs become much calmer and relaxed, after just a few minutes of Reiki. I have worked on all sizes of dogs, from tiny Chihuahuas weighing 6-8 pounds, to mastiffs, weighing more than 140 pounds. Most dogs enjoy the one-on-one attention.

Because I am able to intuitively talk with most animals, I relay any issues that the dog may have, to their owners. Usually, it’s an issue with the type of dog food, the color or the location of the food bowls, or that the dog want to return to a certain location to play again. Although there are many Reiki animal practitioners on the Internet, I would suggest asking around to other pet owners, or pet store owners, for a recommendation of a local practitioner. Both you and your pet will appreciate a Reiki session, in so many different ways, for a long list of reasons. https://blog.sivanaspirit.com/sp-gn-reiki-for-dog-or-cat/
